Balatonboglár, also called the South Balaton region, is the only wine region in Somogy county and covers thirty seven settlements, most of them on the southern shore of the lake with a few further inland towards Kaposvár. The southern shore is flatter and gentler than the volcanic north, with rolling hills of loess and sand sloping down to the water.
Around two thirds of the planting is white, led by Olaszrizling, Chardonnay and Királyleányka, with Kékfrankos, Zweigelt and Merlot behind them. The region supplies a large share of Hungary's base wine for sparkling production, which suits the lighter, higher acid style the ground here gives. Its scale and the holiday traffic along the lake have made it a region of large producers and direct sales rather than small estates, although a number of serious growers have established themselves in the hills behind the shore.
