Tikveš is the heart of Macedonian wine, a hot, dry basin around Kavadarci, Negotino and Demir Kapija where the Vardar cuts south through the hills. It is the sunniest and driest part of the country, with low rainfall, poor sandy and clay soils and a lake that moderates the worst of the summer heat. Those conditions give small berries, deep colour and high sugar, and they have made this the most planted and most famous district in the region.
Vranec from Tikveš is the benchmark for the variety: dark, powerful and tannic, with ripe black fruit. Temjanika is the white counterpart, floral and dry, grown especially around Kavadarci. The Tikveš winery, founded in 1885, grew into one of the largest in southeastern Europe, and the surrounding villages still live from the harvest. Modern estates have added Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, but the local varieties remain what the region is known for.
