Costers del Segre is the appellation of the province of Lleida in inland Catalonia, and it is unusual in being made up of several separate pockets rather than one block: Raimat, Segrià, Garrigues, Valls del Riu Corb, Artesa de Segre and Pallars, which between them stretch from the flat irrigated plain near Lleida into Pyrenean foothills above 700 metres.
The climate is continental and harsh, with hot summers, cold winters, thick winter fog on the plain and very little rain. Raimat is the best known subzone and something of a special case: a huge single estate, planted from the early twentieth century on land made farmable by the Canal d'Urgell, where Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were introduced to Spain on a commercial scale. The Garrigues subzone, poorer and higher, grows old Garnacha and Macabeo on stony terraces among the olive groves and makes the more traditional wines.
